Tape One
Dr C talks to Elwoods parents to explain about ADHD in clear terms he explains symptoms and re-assures the parents that the condition is not their fault or due to bad parenting. Dr C talks also about the hereditary possibility and the tests which were used in diagnosis and the checklists and forms completed by both parents and teachers.
Then Dr C talks to Elwood and explains in clear simple language what ADHD is and he teaches Elwood a song about the three main symptoms. He encourages Elwood and ensures that he is not made to feel stupid and tells him that there are things they can do to help. They also construct a family tree to explain what is meant by something being hereditary.
Tape Two and Three
These concentrate more on specific issues with role play therapy sessions with Mr & Mrs Splinter, Elwood and one session with his sister. These cover issues of medication and sibling feelings along with explainations of how the family can try various stratagies to help cope with Elwoods behaviour and techniques for change Elwoods sessions in particular focus on disscusing his feelings and explaining why he feels as he does with techniques to help i.e.: - breaking longer tasks into smaller tasks.
I watched these videos with our ADHD son, Richard, who sat engrossed and couldn't stop talking about them for days after.
With the use of ventriloquism, humor, song and magic Dr C and of course Elwood and the rest of the poppet family, take the whole family through the diagnosis and explaination of ADHD. The use of various techniques and stratagies to help the family cope and work to improve the whole family isituation.
